Principles of Effective Teaching and General Roles of a Good Teacher

In the field of education, most of us believe that teaching is a multifaceted human activity for it entails a wide range of teaching approaches, interactions, planning, organizational arrangement and material resources that transpire within the four walls of the classroom and in the teaching-learning process.

Another view holds that effective teaching is the act of providing diverse activities that facilitate learning. Brown and Thornton have delineated certain distinctions between teaching and educational information-giving.

According to them, both of these teaching-learning functions are indispensable, but they are not the same. They have distinct functions on how a certain student learns fast with a right approach, the other one learns very fast with retention and the last one seems to absorb everything based on interesting conceptualization of the teaching-learning process, and what the student has fully learned from the teacher in a gradual way of teaching.

Principles of teaching should be followed by an effective teacher in order for him/her to be aware of the positive outlooks, prevailing classroom situations, and to be efficient at all times in classroom activities.

Furthermore, to know more of the so-called classroom strategies, what are these principles of teaching? Well, according to various authors, there are five principles of teaching to be used as a guide to effective classroom teaching-learning situations: 1) respect for the individual; 2) democracy as a way of life; 3) providing suitable conditions for the development and maintenance of a sound personality; 4) improving group living in the classroom; and 5) improving the classroom environment.

Through these principles, an effective teacher must have the best approach of teaching that gives the nature of the strategy in class or method of teaching to be used in everyday discussions. It points out how a lesson is to be developed and to be technically formulated in order to pave the way for effective teaching and learning processes, and for the extent of participation by the teacher and the learners in a classroom setting, as far as the teaching-learning scenarios are concerned.

Thus, it is indispensable for the teachers to take cognizance of the moral duties and responsibilities, especially when they face students with diverse family backgrounds just to share content-savvy, must use every precious time with the students, to get along with them by sharing current events or information, to teach them how to excogitate, to open the door to varied experiences in life, and to impinge on their hearts so that classroom scenario makes the teaching-learning enjoyable and meaningful.

The effective teachers must have the mastery of the subject matter. That is true! In order for them to gain the mastery of the subject matter, they have to know first the fundamental rules or principles of absorbing the contents or subject matters before imparting all-out knowledge to their students.

Teachers should encourage their students to ask questions, to give their viewpoints, reactions or comments. There are also other ways  in order for them to become very effective in imparting knowledge to their students; in all teaching activities, motivation is at all times a part or should always be a part of teaching because students do not  learn as much as they do without motivation. It should be followed by a query or a step-by-step level of questioning from literal level to interpretative level and from metaphorical level to evaluative level. And the third one is a lecture because it is considered an effective method of communication to be utilized by the teachers. In general, the roles of an effective teacher are as follows: model, classroom manager, facilitator of learning, motivator, friend, counselor and evaluator of students’ performance.

  2. For me, being a teacher is not just to master the lesson, but also to connect the lesson in the real life situation of every
student that you have. To give concrete reality example about the subject matter. Ask question to the student based on the lesson, by answering that question, you will know what kind of learner do you have.
You can now facilitate and motivate your learner.

  3. We all know that teaching is not an easy job.Learning the basic skills necessary for me to become an effective educator can be especially difficult for a first year teacher. Becoming an effective teacher takes practice and special guidance from mentors and administrators. Effective teaching does not involve presenting your exciting lessons or activities to the class, it is a craft learned over time. Effective teaching is a teaching philosophy that can distinctly change given the situation. For example, a classroom with five students is a much different situation than addressing a class of forty students. Having the skills and abilities necessary to become an effective teacher will allow you to craft your lessons and teaching style to accommodate any size of class. As what i have observed teachers nowadays really find ways on how to handle situations of what kind of students the classroom will have now.so as a teachers/educators we will be more knowledgeable than our students..

A teacher carries a big responsibility in her classroom. She is the one responsible for honing the mental and physical aspects of her students. A teacher should maintain a positive learning environment. Psychologically, students could be affected if they have problems with their teachers. And for that,
she must be flexible and knowledgeable enough in making decisions and plans for her class considering the student's individual differences. Remember that a teacher is considered as a second mother or father towards her students.

    indispensable- absolutely necessary
