“It was all or nothing, we have no choice but give it a try,” says Charles Catipay, one of the contestants in ‘Tagisan ng Talino,’ representing Minglanilla National Science High School.

The third elimination round in ‘Tagisan ng Talino’ and ‘Speech Choir’ sponsored by STI, Julies Bakeshop, SM-Cebu City, Rotary Club of Cebu, DepEd and other companies was held at SM Activity Center in Cebu City last November 25. The events were intended for high school students, both private and public, in which the winning team received the scholarship certificates from STI and cash prize during the grand finals.

The ‘Tagisan ng Talino,’ has tested the student’s ability to answer questions in different subjects such as English, Filipino, Math, Science, T.LE., Values and Music. The participating school like St. Scholastica’s Academy won first place after having achieved 38 points, gaining a one point lead over Minglanilla National Science High School represented by Charles Catipay of IV-Uranium, Janice Panilagan of IV-Platinum and Janine Aliganga of III-Nickel who were ranked second, gaining 37 points overall. It was followed by Mandaue Comprehensive High School with 35 points after the three rounds.

“In the first round we were nervous at that time and we were lagging behind. We decided to grab the green flag. It would mean we have to take the risk of losing points; but it was all or nothing, we have no choice but to give the best shot,” said Catipay.

Minglanilla National Science High School 20 selected participants, together with Dr. Ermetes F. Adolfo, Jr., English Coordinator, and Mrs. Jacqueline F. Bucao, were awarded 1st runner-up in “Speech Choir.” St. Scholastica’s Academy won the third place, and Mandaue Comprehensive High School won the first place.

Only the first winning schools were qualified and participated in the grand finals.

  1. To the school participants, well there is never harm in trying, at least it was an experience for you to learn, cherish and perhaps improve in the next competitions.
